Los Santos feels far less overwhelming when you know how to reach the right tools quickly. Your character's phone is more than a story prop; it is a handy control centre for contacts, emergency help, and special number sequences. If you are setting up a fresh playthrough with GTA 5 Accounts, learning this small feature early will save time. The controls are simple, though the exact button depends on your platform, and you can get the phone open while standing, driving, or preparing for trouble.

Opening the phone without breaking your flow

On PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, tap Up on the D-pad. PC players can press the Up Arrow key. The handset appears on screen, showing its familiar collection of apps. Move through the icons with the D-pad, an analogue stick, or your mouse. You will soon recognise Contacts, usually shown with a person-shaped symbol. It is worth practising this while things are quiet, because reaching the phone during a police chase takes a little more focus than it seems.

Finding the keypad

The Contacts app first shows people linked to your character, so do not worry if you cannot see a keypad straight away. Press Square on PlayStation, X on Xbox, or Spacebar on PC to switch views. You should then see a numeric dial pad. From there, enter digits with the controller or type them directly on a PC keyboard. The screen is responsive, but pressing too quickly can occasionally make you select the wrong digit, especially when you are rushing.

Useful calls and number sequences

Some numbers have practical uses, while others are simply fun to try. Dialling 911 connects you with Los Santos Emergency Services. An operator then lets you choose the response you need. A call can be useful when you want a fire crew, medical assistance, or police support nearby. Special sequences beginning with 1-999 can also trigger unusual effects, alter the weather, provide vehicles, or give your character a temporary ability. Keep a short list nearby until the ones you use most become familiar.

Press Up to bring up the phone.
Open Contacts and use the keypad-switch button.
Enter the digits carefully, then press that same button to place the call.
Use emergency services when you need a quick response in the city.

Small details that make calls easier

You can return to the game world after a call by closing the phone as usual, so there is no need to stand still for long. Try a few sequences in a quiet area first, then use them during missions when you know what each one does. Players who want a different starting setup may also choose to buy GTA V Accounts while keeping these phone controls in mind, since the same method works across the major versions of the game.
